Position Summary

Chief Operator and Supervisor of BNR treatment plant and process. Operates and maintains the WWTP in a safe and efficient manner in order to ensure compliance with Utah Division of Water Quality (DWQ), United States Environmental Protection Agency and local regulations and requirements as applicable. Function as Facility’s Direct Responsible Charge (DRC) Operator at the Grade IV level as specified by Utah DWQ. Skilled in all process control operations and able to independently evaluate treatment plant operability and adjust operations to obtain the maximum treatment efficiency. Oversee operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, gears, electrical and electronics, computers, hand and automatic tools, moving and stationary industrial equipment employed in the process of treating wastewater and keeping such equipment in an always ready state and always operating state. Scheduling of employees.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Grade IV Operator Certification in Sewage Treatment and Collections Operator II.
  • Six years of wastewater plant operating experience.
  • Up to two years of additional related education may be substituted for years of experience.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Must possess Grade IV Operator Certification in Sewage Treatment within one year.
  • Must possess at least Grade II Collections Operator Certificate.
  • Successfully passes the Wastewater Plant Operators Proficiency Checklist applicable to the position level.
  • Operates full range of wastewater treatment plant equipment, including pump motors, valves, and mixers according to standard operating procedures. Observes control panels, takes readings, and records data. Performs routine plant sampling.
  • Position will be subject to the random drug testing policy and periodic driver’s license verifications.
  • Must live within 50 miles of the MGSID.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies within 20 minutes.
  • May be required to work after normal business hours, nights, weekends and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Utah DWQ guidelines, directives and procedures.
  • Methods, tools, and materials used in general maintenance and repair work.
  • Basic mathematics, chemistry, and biology as related to water treatment.
  • Pumps, motors, and related machinery.

Ability to:

  • Provide supervision of WWTP employees.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and subordinates.
  • Skilled in problem solving.
  • Complete reports and other necessary items to ensure proper operation of the WWTP and compliance with DWQ.
  • Interpret lab data and make proper adjustments.
  • Complete and submit all required reporting with the proper regulatory agency.
  • Accomplish or oversee routine WWTP maintenance activities.
  • Maintain annual respirator certification through annual refresher training and annual physical examination per Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.
  • Accept unconventional shifts/hours during emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in applicable areas identified in the Wastewater Plant Operators Proficiency Checklist that are applicable to the position.
  • Obtain vaccinations required for working in a wastewater environment.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, face shield, water-resistant suit, or respirator per OSHA standards and depending on the job.
  • Pass examinations to certify employee is capable of working in a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Maintain required continuing education units (CEUs).
  • Understand, write and follow written and oral instructions, and establish effective working relationships with those contacted in scope of work.
  • Operate various hand and power tools, and learn plant layout and processes by manual or computerized control.
  • Perform math calculations, sampling, and process control techniques.
  • Complete reports.
  • Learn and follow plant safety procedures. 
  • Speak, read and write in English at a business level.
  • Meet State of Utah requirements regarding citizenship or alien identification certification. 
Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Work in wastewater treatment plant environment. Moderately heavy physical activity exerting up to 50-100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 20-50 pounds of force frequently. Required to stand, walk, or sit uncomfortably for extended periods. Push, pull, or lift medium heavy weights. Exposure to hazards, such as confined spaces, high voltage equipment, dust, grease, heat, cold, dampness, extremely disagreeable odors, noise, heights, unknown levels of pathogenic bacteria, and other environmental aspects which may be considered unfavorable or disagreeable. Required to be in contact with sewage and other byproducts related to the treatment of wastewater. Significant potential exists for exposure to hazardous chemical and gases. Must follow prescribed safety and hygienic procedures. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.
