General Description
The Water Service Worker I performs a variety of semi-skilled and maintenance functions in the Water and Sewer Divisions.
Reporting Relationships
Supervision Received: The Water Worker I receives general and close supervision from the Water Lead or Public Utilities Director.
Supervision Exercised: None
Essential Functions
- Participates in work projects initiated to repair and maintain water lines, water meters, storage tanks, wells and other facilities to insure proper and adequate water supply and distribution for the City and assist in meter reading when necessary.
- May operate equipment in digging and filling in trenches for new water lines, digging around water mains and valves for repair work.
- May operate various construction and maintenance equipment including mini excavator, backhoe, dump trucks, front-end loaders, skid steers, water trucks, tapping machines, etc.
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled pipe fitting, plumbing and general maintenance work in laying water lines, making water connections, connecting, and repairing water meters and fire hydrant installation and repairs.
- Checks and services assigned equipment as directed; reports mechanical problems for shop repair.
- May assist in maintaining, constructing, and repairing streets, sidewalks and other public facilities; drives a snowplow as needed; Maintains a safe and clean working environment; portrays a positive public image and works with the public and other employees in a courteous and professional manner.
- Assists other departments as necessary.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school graduate or equivalent, and
- One (1) year experience in the operation of light equipment, and
- One (1) year experience in maintenance and repair of culinary water mains and service lines, or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience. (i.e. work in construction, plumbing, excavation, etc.)
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Some knowledge of maintenance and repair functions.
- Ability to operate or learn to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to engage in self-directed activities.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Special Qualifications (Licenses, Certifications, etc.)
Must obtain within 1 year:
- First Aid, CPR, AED Certification
- Flagger Certification
- Backflow Technician Certification
- Traffic Control Technician Certification
- CDL Driver’s License
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The Water Worker I works in variable weather and traffic conditions with appropriate safety equipment. The Water Service Worker I may work in unpredictable circumstances while reading meters. The Water Service Worker I may be exposed to human waste when assisting the Sewer Division and is required to receive Hepatitis A/B Vaccine. Tasks regularly involve muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting up to 25-50 pounds. Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential to performing job requirements. Common eye, hand and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions.
